Time, the indefinite continued progress of existence and events occurring in an irreversible succession from the past, through the present, into the future.
Time, individualized, is the duration between one’s birth and death alongside their perception of the duration’s quality. In this sense, time stops, infinitely.
To what value do you hold your time?
Expansively, time exists in a trinity of the past, present and future. Although sometimes the why escapes our grasp, the past just a collection of the where, when, what, how and why that has cultured an individual’s being, one’s memories. It is all the ‘nows’ that have slipped past present. The present is now, the moment of creation, of control, but then again, it is now. Now when you read the first clause on the present is in the past, this is the present and the next sentence is in the future but when you get to it, this sentence will be in the past. The present is a service to the growth of the past, a contribution to the future and most importantly, it is now. It is the shortest of the three. The future is a fantasy. A bubble of hope that one only wishes to grasp, but by most means, the driving force of the present. It is a space in time that exists only in our minds, yet is the most vast and limitless of the three.
As I mentioned before, the present is now. Although it is just a moment, it defines time to the most minute detail. Having it in focus enables time’s trinity to merge into one. You see, the present is not just the most important aspect of time but is time itself. To bring this to light, let’s review the trinity, the past is a collection of many ‘nows’ encoded as memories and the future is only created by the present. So, the present is the moment of creation, it is where we are. It is when we define our fantasies, the future, and when we choose what memories to create, the past. It is the only moment we are alive. You see the past is chapters we can’t unwrite or rewrite, the future is just a compass of our creation but the present is every chance we could ask of life.
The ideas of regrets and worry form one extreme of living in the creations of the past and future respectively and are practiced by most. These ideas could seem beyond one’s manipulation, yet they are the creation of the individual’s mind. The mind then overlooks the fact that at the moment of regret or worry, a present is expended into an unfruitful venture. This creates the illusion that one is powerless against their timeline, for in regret one wrestles the fact that it is no longer writable and in worrying one creates the illusion that their perceived future is a reality when it isn’t. Living in the past or future therefore dwarfs living by reducing the experience of the present. So, live in the present.
I don’t mean you should disregard your memories or have no goals. Your experiences, good or bad, are an immense treasure, and what is a journey without direction? Living in the present means focusing on what you have now and the why and how of what you can do now. It is focusing on what is within your control. So, time, through the present presents to you an opportunity to be present and alive. It gives us the ability to intimately explore the world as it is.
So stay in the ‘now’, be present.
